As a stay-at-home mom (SAHM), I’ve experienced fluctuating weight and energy levels over the years. I would like to share my experiences with fitness and motherhood. In the past four years, I’ve adopted various strategies to incorporate exercise into my daily routine.

Starting My Fitness Journey

When I first began my fitness journey post-partum, I’d exercise during my daughters’ daily nap. As a mom of twins, I quickly learned that keeping them on the same schedule was good for them and me too. Sometimes, I could fit in a workout, a shower, and even a meal during this time. I primarily did Beachbody workouts because they were easy to access and only 30 minutes long, leaving me enough time to complete a few tasks.

As my children grew older, I continued the Beachbody workouts but had less time for other activities. I also started using FitOn workouts for variety. I’m not affiliated with either platform; they’re just resources I’ve found helpful.

Adapting to Changes

When my daughters’ nap schedule became unpredictable or my small business demanded more of my time, I started walking. I aimed to cover at least 1-2 miles in a walk, jog, or run.

Once my children stopped napping altogether, I adjusted my workout schedule again. I’ve tried exercising before they wake up, with them, or when my husband is coming home from work or is already home.

Involve the Children in Exercise

To involve my children, I started doing Grow with Jo workouts on YouTube or simply by going outside and making the most of the weather, we’re in spring right now so the weather fluctuates day-to-day but overall this has been a great way for us to enjoy each other’s company and for me to work on my goals. Regarding the Grow with Jo workouts, they enjoy the music and participate when they feel like it.

When I’m not doing a Grow with Jo workout, I alternate between walking on the treadmill, following the 21-day fix program workouts from Beachbody; now Bodi, or doing The Biggest Loser – Last Chance Workout DVDs.

Advice for Fellow SAHMs

The most important advice I can give to fellow SAHMs is to examine your week and identify times when you can exercise. You may face interruptions and discouragements, but remember that taking care of yourself is not a detriment to your children. In fact, when I consistently eat right, exercise, and practice self-care, I feel more patient, less stressed, and better about myself, which benefits everyone.

Current Fitness Goals

Currently, I’m trying to balance life as a mom, work, and fitness. Over the past year and a half, I’ve struggled to maintain a consistent routine of exercise and healthy eating, often going months without either. However, I decided to take control of my health this year. I want to demonstrate to my daughters the importance of self-care and health. I aim to be a positive role model and a confident mom.

While I’m not sure if this journey will be the same, I plan to spend the next six months focusing on daily habits that will enable me to take control of my health and lose weight for good. If you’d like to join me on this journey, I’d be delighted to have the company.

I plan to continue to update you here as well regarding how things are going with my current goals and with any other tips and tricks I pick up along the way.

Additionally, here are a few items I rely on to help me get consistent with my fitness goals.
